With a history of less than 30 years, Xiao Hong Pao Wu Yi tea is a new superstar in China’s tea market. Grown from modified cuttings of Da Hong Pao tea, it was born out of a thousand-year-old oolong tea tradition.

In the 1950s, Da Hong Pao oolong tea was extremely rare, with only four brushes producing a few kilograms every year.

So Chinese scientists used cuttings from these plants to invent a new kind of Wu Yi tea with similar qualities, but that could be grown in mass amounts.

After about 30 years of work, they produced the first generation of Da Hong Pao tea grown on genetically identical plants. Xiao Hong Pao is the fourth generation of this tea.

In Chinese, Da Hong Pao means “Big Red Robe” and Xiao Hong Pao means “Little Red Robe.” Experts say this tea was so named because its leaves have a unique, beautiful red edge. But many people believe the name has a far more interesting origin.

Legend says that in the Ming dynasty, a young man on his way to the Imperial Examinations fell ill near Wu Yi Mountain. A monk from a nearby temple offered him a bowl of tea, and after drinking it, he immediately recovered.

Thanks to the monk, he made it to the exam, where he achieved the highest score and was received by the emperor. He told the emperor about the tea that cured him, and offered it to the court.

Amazed by the tea, the emperor sent a big red robe to clothe and protect the brushes that grew this oolong tea. The moment the robe was placed on the brushes, their leaves turned red on the edge. Thus this tea was named “Red Robe.”
