While the history of Wu Yi tea can be traced back some 4,000 years ago, Da Hong Pao oolong tea only gained worldwide fame in the last century.

Though there are numerous legends surrounding the origin of this tea, many experts believe it was first discovered in the late Ming dynasty.

According to locals, a local official visited this mountain and was invited to drink tea in a nearby temple. After drinking the tea, the official was greatly surprised at how aromatic and delicious the tea is.

The monks then led him to a sheer cliff and told him the tea was from the four tea brushes hanging there. Seeing that the tea leaves on these brushes had a special red edge, the official decided to name this tea Da Hong Pao, meaning “Big Red Robe,” and he carved this name on a huge rock near the cliff.

Soon afterwards, Da Hong Pao oolong tea became famous across China as some of the best tea in the country.

To protect the original four tea plants, the Chinese government put them directly under its control. They have allowed cuttings to be taken to produce more Da Hong Pao, but harvesting from the original plants is still strictly guarded.

Even though there is more Da Hong Pao oolong tea on the market now, the leaves from the original four brushes are still highly prized.

In 2005, a small amount of leaves were auctioned off at almost 2 million U.S dollars per kilogram. In 2006, the four brushes were insured by the People’s Insurance Company of China for 100 million RMB, or about 14 million U.S dollars.

While many people drink ordinary tea to stay healthy, you can drink Da Hong Pao oolong tea to enjoy a rare, beautiful experience.
